Mary B. (Monroe) Arthur passed away at 93 years of age on Friday, June 6, 2014. Mary grew up in a family of 13 children and was the last surviving member. She was raised and went to high school in Georgia and later studied at the University of Florida and Jacksonville Junior College. Mary was a charter member of the Isle of Faith United Methodist Church and chaired several committees in her time there. She was also an Honorary Life member of the Jacksonville Beaches Ministerial Association and an active Stephens' minister. In her working career she served as Assistant Southeast Credit Manager of Niagara Chemical, chief accountant of Southern Shipbuilding, Office Manager of the Jacksonville Businessmen's Club (now known as the River Club), Executive Secretary of Island Wear Inc., and lastly as Manager of Pablo Towers, an elder community at Jacksonville Beach, Fl. Mary was an active member of the Jacksonville Beach Woman's Club for many years and served as Historian and Chairman of numerous Committees. She also served on the Women's Board of Memorial Hospital and President of the Isle of Palms Community Association. The joy of her life was her extended family. She is survived by her three sons, Van S. Monroe, John R. Monroe and Gregory B. Monroe and two stepchildren, Dr. Mary Lee (Arthur) Burrell and William L. Arthur. There are 9 grandchildren, Dr. V. Stephen Monroe, Dr. Michael H. Monroe, John R. Monroe Jr., Jennifer Monroe Dillon, Jessica Monroe McCormick, William Gallo, Emily Arthur Douglas, William L. Arthur IV, Richard W. Arthur and 16 great grandchildren which she adored. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday June 9, 2014 in the chapel of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd, South, with Pastor Aaron Ankeny of Isle of Faith United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Child Development Center Scholarship Fund at Isle of Faith United Methodist Church, 1821 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL 32224.
