Obituary

Mary Louise Cushing passed away peacefully at Haven Hospice on July 10, 2023. She was surrounded by family, and lived to be an impressive 104 years young!Mary Louise was born December 29, 1918 in Oakland, CA to Elena and Louis Alegria. She was the third of four children, and the only daughter. Mary Louise attended the College of Holy Names, where she majored in music, and minored in education. She went on to marry her dear Sergeant Delbert Cushing and raised her three daughters in Pleasant Hill, CA and Potomac, MD. Mary Louise retired from teaching elementary school in Montgomery County, MD, and moved to a retirement community in Gainesville, FL in 1978. Gainesville is where all three daughters would go on to raise her grandchildren.She was an avid reader, played tennis for the Lady Gators, taught catechism at St. Patrick's Church, and was a member of the B'Nai Israel Friendship Circle. She was an accomplished concert level pianist, and her three recorded CDs are part of the legacy she leaves with us. By far, her greatest joy was spending time with those she loved.Mary Louise is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 55 years, her brothers 'Al,' Richard, and John, and her daughter Andrea and son-in-law Bill Swisher.Mary Louise is survived by her daughters Elaine Langford (Gary) and Diana Ash (Alan). She also is survived by her grandchildren Jenny Lamy (Joe), Benji Langford, Juliet Lindemann (Michael), Adam Ash (Madaline), Bryan Swisher (Stacey), Rene Langford, Dionne Langford, and Jessica Pratt (Andy) as well as her great grandchildren Parker, Evan, Nathan, Colin, James, Aubrey, Jackson, and Zachary.The family invites you to attend a funeral mass at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 500 NE 16th Ave., Gainesville, FL 32601 at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 21, 2023.
