Mary Marshall Fowler - 91Mary was always a happy, thoughtful, good-natured and forgiving person, putting others first. She never thought of herself or had an unkind word for anyone.She was born December 1, 1928 in Jacksonville, Florida. Along with her parents and brother, Samuel Marshall, III, she had a particular fondness for her Aunt Bertha Catlin, Aunt Pat Little and cousin Ruth Little.She graduated from West Riverside Elementary in 1940, John Gorrie Jr High School in 1943 and Lee High School in 1946. During her high school years she joined the Civil Air Patrol. She took flying lessons at Laurie Younge Flying School located at Hart Field. Eventually, she soloed in a Piper Cub plane during high school at the young age of 17. Her beloved Aunt Bertha Catlin would give her money for the flying lessons. She also attended Florida State University for Women from 1946-48 where she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. After returning to Jacksonville, she went on a grand adventure to Bermuda by ship, as she was an adventurous type. She began her working career at Southern Bell in 1950, retiring in 1985 with 28 years of service.She married Hollis A. Fowler, Jr. on November 13, 1954 and had a wonderful marriage. Her life revolved around her husband and children. She gave her all when it came to helping her family and her husband. That devotion included her grandchildren. Nanny helped raise several of the grandchildren keeping in mind each ones needs, feelings and favorite activities. Family was everything to her as were the family get-togethers throughout the years. If you could describe her personality in one word it would be "Thoughtful". "Reserved" is another word that would describe her outside the family circle. She had a love of life, enjoying time with her college friends and had many interests including calligraphy, writing poetry, taking classes at the community college and attending functions with the Southern Bell Pioneers club. She was active with her husband Hollis in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, and shared with Hollis the presidency of North East Florida Square and Round Dancing Association (NEFSARDA).She also enjoyed luncheons, meetings and even a limousine ride to an event for the Red Hat Ladies Club. She converted to the Catholic faith, receiving the sacraments in recent years.She is preceded in death by her husband, Hollis A. Fowler Jr.; her parents Sam W. Marshall Jr. and Nettie Cay Little Marshall and by her brother, Sam W. Marshall III. She is survived by her 4 children: Hollis Fowler III (Pamela), Marshall Fowler (Beverly), Matthew Fowler Sr and Cynthia Maroney (Ken); her grandchildren: Matthew Fowler Jr (Sheun), Staci Cologero (Joe), Samuel Fowler, Amanda Robison (Jeff), Christopher Fowler, Kelli Maroney, Mason Maroney, Joshua Fowler, Lance, Jr. & Scott McMurray (Ren) and by several great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday February 5th, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 P.M. in George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd., S.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Thursday February 6, 2020 in Blessed Trinity Catholic Church,10472 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32246.
