Maxine Frances Smith Maxine Frances Smith, 87, Florida native and longtime resident of Jacksonville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 12, 2012. She was born in Tampa, FL on June 28, 1925 to Guss and Inez Smith. Maxine moved to Jacksonville in 1939 with her mother, father and sister. She retired from the City of Jacksonville in 1986 after 36 years of loyal service. Maxine contributed both her time and resources to helping retired US Veterans. She also had a passion for researching family genealogy and a love for all types of animals. Maxine was loved dearly and will be missed by her sister, Bettie Jean Caraway; 3 nieces, Eva Caraway, Linda Forshee (Gary), Anita Sowers (Chuck); 1 nephew, Howard Caraway, Jr. (Elizabeth); 2 great nieces, Abigail Witt (Jeff), Angela Mills (Teddy); 6 great nephews, Trey Caraway, Clark Caraway, Chuckie Sowers (Danielle), Michael Sowers, Caleb Sowers, Gary (Buddy) Forshee; 2 great-great nieces, Betty and Macy Witt and 1 great-great nephew, Charlie Sowers. The family will receive friends today, August 17th, from 6 pm " 8pm at George H. Hewell & Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd., South. A private graveside service for the family will be held on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Jacksonville Humane Society. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to the St. Vincent's Medical Center Southside ICU staff for their compassionate care.
