Merton Leonard Scott Jr. passed away May 26, 2015. He was born in Whitehall, Montana on December 31, 1931. He grew up in Whitehall until his family moved to Burley, Idaho. Mr. Scott was in the National Guard while in high school; after graduating in 1950, he joined the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. He married the love of his life, Shirley Fay Oliver, in 1954 and began their lives together in southern California. He worked for the telephone company and the FAA before returning to work for the Department of Defense to ride his "Gray Ladies" as an Equipment Specialist. He retired in 1987 while living in Jacksonville, Florida, where they lived until he went to be with the Lord. Mr. Scott was an avid Christian and loved to read his bible. He was also a loving family man that loved his "kids". Some of his hobbies included traveling around the United States, camping, collecting stamp and coins, and working in their yard. Mr. Scott was predeceased by his father, Merton Scott Sr., his mother, Muriel Scott, and his brother, Robert Scott. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Scott, his six children, April (Jon) Carlson, Mark (Bette) Scott, Robin Scott, Janice (Myke) Long, Joy (Curt) Hopperstad, and Merton (Stephanie) Scott III, 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and three sisters Shirley Rae, Helen Swaby and Sara Mae Hess. A viewing will be held at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home at 4747 Main Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206 on June 1, 2015 from 10am to 12pm followed by a graveside service to be held at 2:30pm at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at 4083 Lannie Rd.
