Muriel Combs Ames, 91, passed away on February 24, 2016 in Jacksonville. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Greenlawn Cemetery with Fr. Fred Parke of Assumption Catholic Church officiating. Mrs. Ames was born on June 10, 1924 in Rockville Centre, N.Y. to Ray and Mary Combs. She grew up on Long Island, NY, and graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University, in 1945 with a degree in Music. During World War II, she worked for a time for the Celanese Corporation, a defense contractor. She married her high school sweetheart, Norman Ames, in 1946. While her husband finished college and graduate school, she worked in the departments of several Midwestern and Southern universities. After moving to Florida with her family in 1963, she began her teaching career at St. Leo College and its prep school. She also served as St. Leos Dean of Women. In 1967, the family moved to Jacksonville, and Mrs. Ames taught Latin and English at Bishop Kenny High School, from 1967 to 1990, when she retired. Mrs. Ames was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Norman, and her parents. Mrs. Ames is survived by son, Christopher Ames (JoAnn), Beverly, MA, children: Jennifer, Jeffrey, and Joshua; son, Carlton Ames (Kazumi), Fort Lee, NJ; daughter Bonnie Ames Glober (James), Jacksonville, FL, children: Max, Gordon, and Celeste.
