Obituary

Mrs. Oleeta Katherine (Green) Hardenbrook, age 96, of Starke, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at her home since 1968, on Market Road. Oleeta was born on November 16, 1927, at the family home on North Walnut Street, in Starke, to the late Nelson and Winifred "Boots" (Wimberly) Green. Starke was her lifelong permanent residence, though she lived in Europe, Asia, and across the United States as she traveled the world with Donnie and her sons in Donnies U.S. Army career, retiring home to Starke in 1968. She graduated from Bradford High School in the class of 1945 and, after Donnie retired from the Army, worked as the secretary for the First United Methodist Church, as well as an account specialist for North Florida Telephone Company. Oleeta was a member of the First Methodist Church, later the First United Methodist Church, and now Foundation Church, all of Starke. She worked many hours for her church, serving Methodist womens groups in many ways, including as President. She was also the Sunday School Secretary, coordinated Communion preparation, served as Acolyte mother for many years, prepared thousands of meals for all kinds of church events for over 30 years, served on governance boards, and sang in the church choir for decades, which she loved as much as she loved cooking. She also cooked and served meals for many years for the Starke Rotary Club, the Womans Club of Starke, and the Chamber of Commerce annual banquet, as well as for many weddings, receptions, graduation ceremonies, and other events. She was always ready to lend a hand wherever needed in our community. She served on the Election Polls as an inspector and then clerk for decades, strongly believing in our rights as citizens for which her husband Donnie had served to protect. She taught cooking to youth in the Santa Fe College summer "College for Kids" program for years. She aided in support of the Boy Scouts of America in Japan, Pennsylvania, and Starke, as well as for the North Florida Council, and served Girl Scouts in this area. Until her health began giving her problems, she served wherever there was a need, in church ministries, community activities, and for whomever she saw had a necessity or want. In addition to her parents, Nelson and Boots, she was preceded in death by her soul-mate and husband, Donald "Donnie" Neil Hardenbrook, her sister Ruby Green Hudson and her husband Ed, brother Harry Green, and sister Phoebe Green Bakken and her husband, Joseph Bennie Bakken II, sisters-in-law Martha Green and Barbara Jean Green (DeRitch Green), her beloved grandson, Justin Neil Hardenbrook, nephew, Joseph Bennie Bakken III, and niece, Eoline Green Underhill (Gary Underhill).
