Opal Maureese Lewis Opal Maureese Lewis 90, of Jacksonville, FL passed away on June 4, 2013. Opal was born the 1st of September, 1922 to Walter Bagley and Bertha Mae Cannon in Nicholls, GA., and she was a rare survivor of childhood Polio. She graduated with a teaching degree from Brewton-Parker College in Statesboro, GA and taught at Bickley School in Bickley, GA. Opal Maureese married Hershel D. Lewis in Nicholls, GA upon his return from service in the U.S. Air Force in Northern Italy during WWII. She lived in Jacksonville since 1947 and was a member of First Baptist Church since 1951.Opal Maureese was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Hershel D. Lewis, Sr. & a sister, Laverne. Survivors include her sons; Walter Kenneth Lewis (wife, Nell) & Hershel Daniel Lewis, Jr. (wife, Renee); grandchildren, Laurie Lewis Unkefer (John), David Kenneth Lewis, Leigh Ellen Lewis, M.D. & Hershel Daniel Lewis, III (wife, Patty); great- grandchildren, Annie Elizabeth Unkefer & Haley Grace Eccles (Kris); sisters, Laree Carter & Frankie Odum and many nieces, nephews & extended family members. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday June 8, 2013 in the chapel of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd., S. with Rev. Calvin Carr officiating.
