Orville L. "Blackie" Petty, 102, a longtime resident of Jacksonville, passed away December 24, 2015 in Jacksonville, FL. The family will receive friends Sunday December 27 from 5pm to 7pm at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4747 Main Street. Graveside services will be held 10am Monday December 28 at Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Ellen Cross officiating. Mr. Petty was born January 5, 1913 in Double Sinks, FL. During F.D.R.s "New Deal" Blackie worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps. before joining the United States Army Air Force during WWII arriving in the European Theater one day before the end of the war. Settling in Jacksonville after the war he worked for and retired from Southern Bell after 37 years. Mr. Petty was a member of the 44th Street Baptist Church and was a great freshwater fisherman along with enjoying bowling and gardening.He was predeceased by his wife Chesteana in 1980 and survived by his daughter Barbara (Jim) Mathews, a son John (Henrietta) Petty and a sister Louise Drane.
