Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Paul A. Shinholster, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who departed this life on February 28, 2026, in Alachua, Florida.

Paul was born on July 30, 1945, in Mackay, Queensland, Australia. From his earliest days, he demonstrated a quiet strength and determination that would characterize his entire life. He later made his home in Florida, where he built both his career and his family.

Paul proudly served his country in the United States Navy before continuing his commitment to service as a Florida State Trooper. Throughout his years in uniform, he exemplified courage, integrity, and an unwavering sense of duty. He had a sharp, observant mind and an ability to see directly to the heart of any matter. Though often quiet, he possessed a keen wit and an understated sense of humor that those closest to him treasured.

Above all else, Paul was a man of his word. Dependable, loyal, and deeply protective of those he loved, he believed that promises mattered. If he said he would do something, it was done — without excuse. Beneath his calm and confident exterior was a generous and tender heart; he would readily give the shirt off his back to someone in need. Children and animals alike seemed instinctively drawn to him, a quiet testament to the kindness and gentleness he carried within.

At the center of Paul's life was his beloved wife, Paulette. Their love story began in 1963 when he was 17 and she was 16. They were married the weekend of her high school graduation — a bond that endured faithfully for 62 years. His love for Paulette was constant and steadfast, and together they built a life grounded in devotion and partnership.

In retirement, Paul devoted himself to his two great passions: music and fishing. For more than 20 years, he performed as a singer and guitarist in his band, even crafting his own guitars and creating a room in his home dedicated to music. If he was not singing, he could often be found saltwater fishing along Florida's waters, sharing time on the boat with family. He passed along his love of music to his grandson Trevor through guitar lessons and treasured his time on the water with his grandson Tyler by his side.

He will be remembered for his radiant smile, his love of strong black coffee, his cowboy hat and boots, and his fondness for ice cream and popcorn. These simple joys, along with his steady presence and quiet strength, defined the man his family knew and loved.

In his final years, Paul faced a long illness with remarkable perseverance. Even as his health declined and each day became more difficult, his love for his wife and family gave him the strength to keep fighting and remain with them as long as he could. His resilience and determination were a reflection of the character he demonstrated throughout his life.

Paul is lovingly remembered by his wife, Paulette; his daughter, Tammy; his son, Drew; his grandsons, Tyler and Trevor; his great-grandchildren, Alden and Robin; and his brother Russell.

He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, devotion, music, and unwavering love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
