Rebecca Hackler Houghton

Mrs. Rebecca (Hiltzheimer) Hackler Houghton, 94 of Penney Farms, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017. Mrs. Houghton was born March 25, 1922 in Pulaski, Virginia to the late Fitzhugh Lee and Addie Ray (Thomas) Hiltzheimer. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia and was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She faithfully assumed many roles for United Methodist Women. Mrs. Houghton moved from Morehead City, North Carolina to Penney Retirement Community (PRC) in 1987 and volunteered widely in the community. She particularly enjoyed square dancing (where she met Ray Houghton whom she married in 1991), coordinating automobile transportation for residents, helping to teach basic computer skills to others in PRC, serving as a dining room cashier, and coordinating the cashier schedule. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Cullen Hackler in 1975, two brothers, Fitzhugh Lee Hiltzheimer, Jr. and Franklin Belle Hiltzheimer, Sr., and her husband, Raynold Edward Houghton who died in 2016. Survivors are her sons, Cullen Lee Hackler (Barbara) and Mark Andrew Hackler (Kathryn), six grandchildren (Sarah Bayer, Megan Williams, Jeff and Stewart Hackler, and Eric and Stephen Hackler), and six great grandchildren (Liam and Jacob Bayer, Abby and Bradley Williams, and Jack and Davis Hackler). Additionally, from her marriage to Mr. Houghton, there are three children; William Houghton who is deceased, Elizabeth Carson (Kemp), and Barbara Winters (John), seven grandchildren (Rob and Scott Carson, Katie Ricks, Holly and Dustin Winters, and Brian and Edward Houghton), and 5 great-grandchildren (Abbie Ricks, Carolyn Moore, and Francine, Starling, and Kathleen Baer). A Memorial Service in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Penney Memorial Church.
