Dr. Richard Donald Berger of Gainesville, FL passed away December 22, 2011 at E.T. York Hospice Care Center. He was 77.Dr. Berger was born in Macungie, PA January 15, 1934 and moved to Gainesville from Belle Glade, FL in 1976. He served in the US Army and was of the Lutheran faith. He was a professor of plant pathology/epidemiology with the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Dr. Berger enjoyed golf and was a member of the UF Men's Golf Club.He is survived by his wife, Joyce; son, Dan Berger (Aimee) of Alexandria, VA; daughter, Tina Fischer (Jimi) of St. Petersburg, FL; sister, Ruth VanRaay of VA; brothers, Charles Berger (Norma) of Apex, NC and Ronald Berger (Sharon) of Delray Beach, FL; grandchildren Katelyn, Shane, and Maxwell Fischer and Shelby Berger.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on December 30, 2011 in the chapel at Haven Hospice E.T.
