Rock 'n Roll lost one of its own on Monday January 19, 2015. Richard Panken, 66, a second generation Jacksonville Native and Jacksonville Beach resident, died from complications from a chronic illness. Richard was a caterer to musical luminaries, operating Backstage Catering and serving notable musicians who played Jacksonville and the region. Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, BB King, Frank Sinatra, Ted Nugent, Wynonna Judd, Willie Nelson, Moody Blues, Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana and many others enjoyed themselves at his table. He was road manager for Lynyrd Skynyrd and an organizer of the epic Atlanta International Pop Festival of 1970. Richard was known as a man of generous heart and spirit and was a mighty fine chef. Preceded in death by mother Sylvia Hackel Panken and father Herbert Panken, he is survived by two brothers Robert Panken (Marilyn) of Jacksonville and David Panken (Sue) of St. Augustine and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday January 22, 2015 in Evergreen Cemetery Temple Section. Memorials may be made in Richard's name to the charity of your choice.
