Funeral Services for Robert "Coach" Funari, 80 of Jacksonville, FL will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 10AM in the chapel of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard, South Jacksonville, FL 32216. A visitation will take place at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 between the hours of 6-8PM. Robert was born in Bluefield, WV on June16, 1934 and passed away peacefully on June 25, 2014. Robert is preceded in death by his parents Alessandro and Anna Funari, three brothers; Angelo "Mike" Funari, Alex Junior Funari and Jimmy Funari. He is survived by his children, Shalaine Alexander (Shane), Marcus Funari (Dawn) and Lisa Reina, his grandchildren; Dominic, Cash, Elle, Shane and Shannon. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his girlfriend Wanda Touchton. "They don't make men like him anymore". He will be missed greatly by his community. He served four years in the United States Air Force. He held a master's degree and was dedicated to a life of athletics. He was a successful college and professional football player, basketball player, former record holder for shot put in West Virginia and a golden gloves boxer. Robert was also a coach for over 40 years, he coached at new Smyrna Beach High School, Green Cove High, and then finished up with 36 years with Duval County Public Schools: Tech High School, Kirby Smith, Paxon, Andrew Jackson...he spent a majority of his time as Athletic Director at Andrew Jackson High School He was very well known in the community and was at the forefront of desegregation in the public school system. He was a legend on the Northside. He was called the "Mayor of Main Street".
