We visited the island back in 1957 by ferry and found moms home still standing. It was a large home with a huge 12 wide rap around porch on stills about 16 feet off the ground on the bay side of the island. Ruby Thomas married Roy W. Tyre Sr. on March 29th 1941 in Green Cove Springs by the county Judge. Ruby Tyre gave birth to Paulette Tyre on December 21st 1943 and birth to Roy Wilson Tyre Jr. on August 3rd 1947 while her husband was enlisted in the US Army. Dad built their first home _ mile north of the Keystone Heights city limits in 1951. In 1955 Mom helped Dad with the opening of his hardware and building supply store next door to the resident. Later in 1964 dad built a laundry mat for Mom to own and run as her own business. Both Ruby and Roy retired spending much of their time in North Carolina and enjoying retirement. On May 31st 1995 Ruby lost Roy to heart attack after 56 years of marriage. On January 22nd 2003 she lost her daughter Paulette to suicide. This had a profound effect on Rubys life but she managed through it but still had three generations for grandchildren. Ruby Wood her grandchild, Marie Wood her great grandchild and Zada Wood her great great grandchild. All who loved her dearly and devoted much of their time visiting their grandmother. Ruby was active in the community. Her husband was Ambassador in the Shrine club and she was an Eastern Star. She was a member of the Keystone Heights Golf Club and in the Keystone Bowling league winning numerous trophies. She and Roy loved fishing and hunting. Actually Ruby didnt care for the hunting so much. Ruby was a teacher to many and a mentor to allot of folks. Her knowledge and secret recipes have pleased allot folks in Keystone and elsewhere. She was devoted to her family and would volunteer to help anyone who needed it. She brought joy and happiness to anyone she came in contact with all over the world. Ruby lived by a code of ethics and made sure her children lived by her code. Just because you may not like somebody, doesnt give you the right to be mean. She was one of a kind and youll never meet another more caring wife, mother, relative or friend. We will truly miss her. hide
