Ruth Edith Christianson Register Coleman Ruth had a remarkable life. She married Francis Cash Register in 1942, a Navy fighter pilot ace who was shot down in Attu, Alaska, in 1943. A widow at the age of 26, Ruth joined the Red Cross and began an adventure that would take her to England and France, where she ran Aero Clubs on bomber bases during World War II. It was one of the delights of her later life when she renewed friendships with the pilots, crews and families of the 492nd Bomb Group in 2002, attending several reunions. She met James C. Coleman, Jr., an Army Captain, at the French Riviera on R&R leave in 1945 and married him in Green Cove Springs, Florida, in 1946. Ruth and Jim moved to Jacksonville in 1947 when Jim started his insurance agency. Ruth loved the theatre, and besides her family responsibilities, found time to volunteer at the Jacksonville Little Theatre, where she did costuming and stage-managed numerous shows. As Wardrobe Mistress, she was the longest-serving member of the local chapter of the International Association of Theatrical Stage Engineers, dressing all the Broadway shows that came to the Jacksonville Civic Auditorium, until her retirement at the age of 89. Ruth was also on the Board of Directors of the Jacksonville Ballet Guild, and a life member of the Daughters of the Nile, elected Queen in 1963.Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, James Corbett Coleman, Jr., her brother, Adolph Marcus Christianson, Jr., his wife, Betty and their son, A.M. Christianson, III. She is survived by her son, James C. Rock Coleman, III, and his wife, Faye, of Jacksonville; her daughter, Christine Tina Woods and her husband, John, of Kerrville, Texas. Sister-in-law, Norma Christianson of Bismarck, North Dakota; nephew James Christianson, his wife, Deb, of Bismarck, North Dakota, and their children, Lauren and Marcus ; Niece Mary Christianson Carman, her husband, John, of Newton, Kansas, and their children, Aaron and Mike. Grandchildren are Marcus Coleman; Amelia Coleman; Rebecca Bullard and her husband, Josh; Larry Crawford and his wife, Terri; great-grandchildren are Coleman and Carson Bullard; Mitchell and Jacob Crawford, all of Jacksonville.The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to Ruths caregivers, Eva Abott and Wanda Johnson, who made her last two years so comfortable and enjoyable.Private family services will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville on Friday, December 9, 2011.
