Samuel Inmon Smith, Jr. Memorial services for Samuel Inmon Smith, Jr., 95, will be held at 11:00am Monday, August 6, 2012, in South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church with Rev. B. Fred Woolsey, retired pastor of Southside Christian Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard, South, where the family will receive friends from 3:00pm until 5:30pm on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Childrens Home Society of Florida, 3027 San Diego Road, Jacksonville, FL 32207. Born June 28, 1917, in Pittsburg, Kansas to Samuel and Minnie Smith, Mr. Smith passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at his home in Jacksonville. He was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School, Class of 1935, where he was a Cheerleader for four years. He received his Bachelors in English and History from Drury University, Springfield, Missouri, Class of 1939, graduating Cum Laude. He received his Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Florida. Mr. Smith served as a Lieutenant in command of a United States Navy Minesweeper in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during World War II. He then served 28 years in the Naval Reserve, retiring as a Commander. Mr. Smith was a member of South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School and served both as a Deacon and an Elder. He was one of the founding Trustees of Channel 7 Public Television. A lifelong educator, he served as Principal of Fort Caroline, Lake Shore, DuPont, and Englewood Schools. He served as Director of Secondary Education in the Duval County School System for five years. During his retirement, Mr. Smith loved seeing his former students and attended all reunions to which he was invited. He especially loved his wife Rosas cooking and entertaining family and friends in his home. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mrs. Rosa Buck Smith of Jacksonville; a daughter, Mrs. Karen (Cary) Sims of Hermitage, Tennessee; two sons, Ronald Buck Harrison of San Francisco, California and Jon Pearson of Seattle, Washington; two grandsons, Jonathan Pearson of Seattle, Washington and Jason (Sally) Pearson, of San Marcos, California; and a nephew, Bert (Sally) Roselle of Jacksonville..4140 University Blvd S Jacksonville, FL 32216 f: 904-739-81594747 Main St N Jacksonville, FL 32206 f: 904-353-0763
