Obituary

Stephen Craig Hunter, aged 67, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026. Born on May 12, 1958, in Miami, Florida, Stephen was a loving brother, dedicated professional and proud Navy veteran. He will be fondly remembered for his kind spirit and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Stephen graduated from Southwest Dade High School in 1976. He enlisted in the Navy in 1980 and served for seven years, serving on four different ships which included a tour of duty in Scotland which allowed him to connect with several members of his family. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Navy in 1987, he worked for several prominent South Florida Condominiums as well as a major South Florida Boat Manufacturer. He eventually joined the staff of major electricity supplier Florida Power and Light as a Requisition Specialist where he made sure repair crews had all the materials they needed, especially when recovering from Hurricanes. It was after one hurricane that he adopted his beloved cat Cain, who was in fact named after the storms.

Beyond his professional life, Stephen was a devoted family man. He is survived by his brother Edward Hunter and beloved sister-in-law Toby Hunter, and his sister Caryn Hunter. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marcia Hunter; and his grandmother, Olga Weinstein.

Stephen's love for life and his compassionate nature touched the hearts of all who knew him. He will be missed dearly, not only by his family but also by his friends and colleagues who had the privilege of sharing in his journey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Stephen's memory to the American Cancer Society or organizations supporting veterans.

A memorial service will be held at Temple Shir Shalom on Feb. 22, 2026, at 2 p.m. As we remember Stephen Craig Hunter, let us carry forward his legacy of kindness, courage, and commitment to one another. Rest in peace, dear Stephen. You will always hold a cherished place in our hearts.
