Obituary

Verna Grace Schmidt, 90, of Starke, passed away peacefully in her sleep February 5, 2024, at Windsor Manor in Starke. She was born August 6th, 1933 in McCrory, Arkansas to E. Stanley and Marie (Rogers) Davis. She graduated from East St. Louis High School and earned her Bachelors of Educaton from the University of Illinois. She was a lifelong educator, retiring from the Bradford County Schools after 32 years, although we can testify that she never truly retired from being a teacher. She was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Starke where she was the piano accompanist for many years for the early service and she sang in the choir. She founded the Prayer Shawl Ministry and was a member of the Stephen Ministries Group. She was an avid supporter of music and the arts as well as scouting programs. She accompanied many local band students, at their district and state solo and ensemble contests and she was proud to have all of her sons and grandsons earn the rank of Eagle Scout. She was preceded in death by the late E. Stanley and Marie (Davis) Rogers and her husband of 58 years, John Schmidt. She is survived by Todd (the late Sandy) Schmidt, Cana (Edward) Rensberger, Dirk (Lynn) Schmidt, Shaun (Tammy) Schmidt, as well as grandchildren Samantha (Chris) Flanders, Rowdy Rensberger, Rachel Rensberger, Merideth (Edward) Padgett, Jonathan Schmidt, Thomas Schmidt, and Amber Schmidt.
