Mrs. Virginia F. Darby age 96, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at Parkside Assisted Living Facility in Starke, Florida, where she had been a very happy, contented, and well cared for resident for nearly two years. She and her identical twin sister, Katie, were born in Bronson, Florida on December 10, 1919, to Reuben M and Katie Robinson Fugate. Due to the early deaths of their parents they didnt live together or with their other siblings until they were 12 when Virginias grandfather with whom she lived was killed in an automobile accident. Then she moved to Starke and lived with Frank and Lydia Colley who had raised Katie from an infant. She graduated from Bradford High School, class of 1937, "the best class that ever graduated from BHS," according to her, and attended Florida State College for Women (now FSU) with Katie. In 1941 she married Charles Darby, and worked for him after he was elected Clerk of the Circuit Court of Bradford County. After his death, she served as interim clerk for a short time and then continued to work for three successive clerks as deputy until her retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Starke where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, her daughter, Nancy Lee Darby Akridge, her sisters, Grace Spencer, Ruby Fugate, Eva Chambliss, Katie Wainwright, her brother, Perry Fugate, her granddaughter, Sherry Darby, and her sons-in-law, Bob Nobles and Randy Johns. She is survived by her children, Virginia Johns of Starke, Mike (Brenda) Darby of Fleming Island, and Phyllis Nobles of Mandarin, ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, beloved nieces and nephews, and a host of wonderful friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016 at FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF STARKE at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Scott Crook, Pastor Lynwood Walters, and Pastor Justin Durrance officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1258, Starke, FL 32091, or Hospice of The Nature Coast, 150 N. Main St., High Springs, FL 32643.
