Walter Leon Cherry

Mr. Walter Leon Cherry, age 85, of Keystone Heights passed away Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Roberts Care Center in Palatka. He was born in Doctors Inlet on August 30, 1932 to the late Ralph and Madge (Williamson) Cherry. In 1953, Mr. Cherry enlisted in the United States Army; he was a member of the 82nd Field Artillery Battalion serving with the 1st Cavalry Division in Korea. "After giving fire support to the British, Canadians and Turks, as well as the 1st Cavalry Division, during the nine months they fought in Korea, it is no wonder that Pvt. Cherry and the men of his battalion are held in such high esteem". While serving in the military, Mr. Cherry received four bronze stars and a purple heart. Following the military, he began his career as a truck driver retiring from East Coast Leasing. He was of the Baptist Faith and he enjoyed reading, staying busy and working around the house. Mr. Cherrys wife of 47 years, Mildred Cherry had preceded him in death in 2013. Survivors are his children; Marchell Yates (Joseph), Tyna Cherry (Brian Hawkins), Nancy Waldrup, Roger Gilmore, Rodney Gilmore and Mary Garrison. Also left behind are his grandchildren, Jessica Cherry, Tessa Searels, Tammy Morton, Charles Waldrup II and Selina Mannion along with numerous great and great-great grandchildren. A memorial service for Mr. Cherry will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2017 in the Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home Chapel.
