Obituary

Walter E. McLanahan Walter E. McLanahan, 82, passed away peacefully on June 27th, surrounded by loved ones. Walt was born in McRae, Georgia and was a longtime member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 52 years, Jacqueline McLanahan. Walt enjoyed a successful career with Western Electric Company and retired in 1982 after 29 years of service. He then went on to establish Southern Bingo Supplies of Florida and became known as the "Bingo Man" of the Southeast. After leaving the business in 1994, Walt devoted all his free time to the Arlington Lions Club, where he has been a member for over 42 years. As a member, Walt received many prestigious awards and held numerous positions including Lions Club President, Lions Club Holding Corporation President and Bingo Chairman. In recent years, Walt founded and served as Chairman of the Board for the North Florida Lions Eye Foundation whose mission is to help those with special vision needs but do not qualify for conventional assistance. Walt is survived by his wife of eight years, Faye (Delaney) McLanahan; his three children, Ed McLanahan (Nora), Brenda Myers (Jim) and Harold "Mac" McLanahan (Candie); his grandchildren, Leslie McClanahan, Chrystal Roll, Lauren Myers, J.W. Myers (Beth), Halie McLanahan and Jackson McLanahan; great-grandchildren, John and Lydia Roll; numerous nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Cheryl McLanahan. Lovingly known as Mr. Walt, he was also survived by stepchildren Melanie Delaney (Marty) and Ken Delaney (Alexis) and six step-grandchildren; one step-great grandson and brother and sister-in-law Bob and Linda Woods. A visitation with the family will be from 4-6PM on Sunday at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard, South Jacksonville, FL 32216. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am on Monday July 1, 2013 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 6320 Bennett Rd Jacksonville, FL 32216 with Father Michael J. Larkin as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the North Florida Lions Eye Foundation in memory of Lion Walt McLanahan and sent to the Arlington Lions Club, 6523 Commerce St., Jacksonville, FL 32211- Attention: James Rubel.
