Obituary

Wayne Evan Massey, 85, of Lawtey, Florida, passed away on October 28, 2024, at UF Health in Gainesville, Florida.Wayne was born in Summerfield, Florida, to Elder Audrey (A.E.) and Inez Massey on May 9, 1939. He and his family moved to Lawtey, Florida in 1947. He attended Lawtey Junior High and then graduated from Bradford High in 1957. He married Abbie Esther Harley on March 24, 1963. They were blessed with 61 years of marriage. Wayne served in the United States Army and Florida National Guard. He retired from the Florida Forest Service, where he was a forest ranger and electrician. After retirement, he watched over his younger children and older grandchildren while having fun. He enjoyed growing a garden, woodworking, building, collecting, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends. All while capturing memories with his video camera. On Friday nights, he could be found with Abbie cheering on the Bradford Tornado football team at all the home games for over 60 years. Go Big Red! Wayne was saved by Grace and was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Lawtey. He was a proud former City of Lawtey Council Member and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Edward Lee, Daniel, and Spurgeon Massey. Also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bobby Autry.Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Abbie, and his daughters, Terri (Michael) Andrews of Wellborn, Virginia Autry of Hampton Lake, Audrey (Stephen) Murphy, and Esther (Jeremy) Lawson, all of Starke. He is also survived by his grandchildren Scott (Elizabeth) Taylor, Josh Taylor, Matthew (Willow) Andrews, Ella Murphy, Grant Lawson, and Carley Lawson. Along with his step-grandchildren Cassie (Chad) Reddish and Jim (Angel) Autry. He was the proud great-grandfather to Dylan, Landon, Allie, Annalise, and Adeline Taylor, along with Emma and Will Reddish. Visitation will be Friday, November 1st at 1:00 at the DeWitt C. Jones Chapel of Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home, followed by service at 2:00.
