William "Mr. Bill" Covington III of Alachua passed away July 4th at North Florida Regional Medical Center. He was a native North Carolinian. He was retired from the State Department in Washington, DC as an Engineer and Announcer for the Voice of America. He also was a Captain in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Beaufort County, North Carolina, doing boat search and rescue. He was a world traveler. He was preceded in death by his parents William Henry Covington Jr and Dorothy White Covington and his stepfather Fred Hilker. Survivors include: fianc, long time companion and caregiver Marcia Benton; one son: William (Vonda) Covington, Jr., Greenville, NC; two daughters: JoAnn Harishima, Charlotte, NC, Dawn (Jon Paul) Strachan, Birlington, NC; five grandchildren: Ramsey, Koji, Misa, Isla, Keir, and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 10th, visitation one hour prior to funeral service at Evans-Carter Chapel with Pastor Jess Page officiating. Interment in Fort White Cemetery. Arrangements by Evans-Carter Funeral Home, High Springs, 386-454-2444.
