Obituary

Zelda Joyce Gorman, a cherished resident of Gainesville, Florida for over half a century, passed away on January 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, exploration, and community involvement. Born on March 2, 1933, in Rockford, Illinois, Joyce spent her formative years in nearby Loves Park. Her academic journey took her to Shimer College, where a fateful meeting with Benjamin Gorman led to a lifelong partnership. Throughout her diverse and vibrant career, Joyce wore many hats, including secretary, research associate, data processor, and opinion pollster. Yet it was her role as a devoted homemaker that truly defined her, as she set up homes with Benjamin in various locales, including Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Florida, England, Poland, and Germany. Her long-standing presence in Gainesville was marked by active participation in several bridge clubs and gourmet dinner clubs, as well as her enthusiastic involvement with the University of Florida's Woman's Club. Joyce and Benjamin shared a profound love for travel, visiting nearly every country around the globe, often returning to explore them anew. Their passion for the arts was evident in their long-time support of the Hippodrome Theater and the Gainesville Friends of Jazz. A lover of both cooking and savoring gourmet meals, Joyce's culinary skills were legendary among her friends and family, who often gathered to enjoy her hospitality. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Benjamin L. Gorman and son Brian D. Gorman. She is survived by Gayle D. Johnston, as well as five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her spirit of adventure and love for life. A memorial gathering to celebrate Joyce's remarkable life will be held on January 31, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the Acorn Room at Oak Hammock, located at 2660 S.W. 53rd Lane, Gainesville, Fla. 32608. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to support the Hippodrome Theater, the Gainesville Friends of Jazz, or the University Woman's Club, honoring Joyce's endure commitment to the arts and community. Her memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege to know her.
